CLIENT: Graham Construction
PROJECT: Raigmore Hospital VR mock-up
Graham Construction had originally planned to create full size mock-ups of the large and small theatre spaces as part of a refurbishment project at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.
Rather than incur the cost and limitations of conventional practice in these situations, the team at Graham approached us to prepare a digital version of each theatre space that could be assessed by hospital staff using the latest cutting edge virtual reality platforms.
Using the design information provided, our team were able to develop a detailed digital model complete with a comprehensive depiction of all key theatre furniture and equipment. This was developed to a high level of visual quality to ensure that the intended audience was able to review a convincing representation of each work area.
Our standard navigation controls were applied such that each space could be intuitively navigated using a dedicated controller. The issued versions were configured specifically for us with the latest Oculus Rift virtual reality headset running on a high performance workstation to provide the optimum experience.
The availability of a realistic virtual reality model has completely transformed the approach both the board and the contractor have taken towards project development.
This has informed several key decisions and undoubtedly prevented potentially abortive work but enabling those ultimately using these spaces to simulate their work processes and to help in assessing logistical issues at a time when subtle adjustments are much easier to include in the proposed construction programme.
“The final environment has proven to be extremely effective in facilitating a meaningful dialogue with clinical staff that improves their involvement in the dialogue and greatly reduces the risk involved in planning our work.
It was a pleasure to work with your team and the process for converting our technical information into a convincing visual representation of these spaces was certainly effective.”
